An account of the talk given by the South Somerset Archaeological Research Group (Ssarg) on 3 September 2012.

Neil and Nigel showed a power point presentation and static display of recent projects taken on by this group recently. These included an Iron Age Fort, where, using geophysical survey techniques, were able to identify medieval agricultural methods and track ways.

At Castle Farm, South Cadbury , the site was to be cleared for new farm buildings. Ssarg were invited to investigate some of the land after about a meter of the top soil had been taken off. They found some skeletons and animal burials and some pottery including an complete small pot or mug with a handle – very old and rare. Also some metal object and brooches.

Then a Roman Villa at Lufton which revealed a sub-surface early agricultural landscape. There is much more work to be done here over the next few years.
Next to Misterton where the owner had already commissioned a geophysical survey. Some finds included a line of shallow post holes and what appeared to be a working surface. More research to be done here too.

The group is run by volunteers – mostly self taught. They raise funds by hiring out their skills and equipment. Ssarg is working on recording all finds and writing detailed reports, which are verified by Somerset County Council and put on their Historic Environment website – OASIS, a long and painstaking task. There is much frustration at the loss of unique historical facts being lost because the group does not get there before it is covered up or destroyed for ever.

We have been invited to a special treat – a whole day on 6th October at Cadbury Village Hall (fully accessible) from 9.30 to 4pm. Tickets (£15) from Dr.Clare Randall Tel: 01305 833015 or email: clare.arch@gmail.com  More information from www.ssarg.org.uk  or tel: 01935 881808 New members are very welcome
